PhD Studentship: Physical Development in the Early Years in Wales

The School of Education and Social Policy at Cardiff Metropolitan University are delighted to offer a fully funded Welsh Graduate School for the Social Sciences (WGSSS) (ESRC DTP) studentship in the Education Pathway, starting in October 2026.

PhD Title

Understanding the knowledge, application and impact of physical development in the early years in Wales

Partner Organisation

Early Years Wales (third-sector organisation)

Project Summary

This collaborative PhD, led by Cardiff Metropolitan University in partnership with Early Years Wales, will explore how physical development is understood, applied and experienced in early childhood settings across Wales. The project will investigate current practitioner knowledge and practice, and evaluate the impact of community- and school-based interventions designed to enhance children’s physical literacy and holistic development.

Using a mixed-methods approach, including a Wales-wide survey and co-produced interventions with practitioners, parents and educators, the research will generate evidence to inform early years practice, training and policy. The project aims to improve outcomes in physical, cognitive and emotional development, particularly in areas of social deprivation, and contribute to national early years provision.

The successful candidate will work closely with Early Years Wales, gaining access to a large national network of early years professionals and contributing to real-world impact across the sector.
