Our Welsh Community

We are proud to be a university in Wales and we are committed to promoting and celebrating the Welsh language and its culture. If you study at Cardiff Met, you'll become part of our close-knit community with plenty of opportunities to explore and develop your Welsh identity. We encourage everyone to get involved in celebrating important Welsh events including St David’s Day, St Dwynwen’s Day, Welsh Language Music Day and many more.

Weekly rehearsals are held throughout the autumn term as we prepare for two exciting highlights of the choir's year: performing at the Christmas Service in Llandaff Cathedral and singing at the prestigious Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol dinner.

The ‘GymGym’ is the Welsh Society managed by Cardiff University welcoming Welsh students from Cardiff Met University. It’s a society for the city’s students in order to participate and enjoy various activities that promote and celebrate the Welsh language. Many different events are held throughout the year which include a lot of socialising, plenty of fun, but this society is also a special way to make new friends in the Welsh language!

Cardiff is home to some fantastic live music venues; from one of the world’s leading stadiums to small grass-roots gig venues featuring Welsh Language pop artists. Clwb Ifor Bach, one of the city’s most iconic, yet smaller live music gig venues, has been at the forefront of Welsh culture for over 40 years bringing crowds the absolute best music from Wales and beyond. Cardiff Castle, in the city centre, is a striking symbol of Welsh history, blending Roman, Norman, and Victorian elements. The St Fagans National Museum of History, just outside the city, is a must-see open-air museum that brings Welsh heritage to life with reconstructed historic buildings and traditional crafts.

Watch a show at the Wales Millennium Centre, whether it’s a Welsh-language play, an opera, or a musical, the Centre is a cultural landmark and architectural gem.

If rugby is your thing, catch a rugby match at the Principality Stadium and experience the passion of Welsh fans.

Cardiff is also the spiritual home of the Wales national football team. Home matches are held at the Cardiff City Stadium, where The Red Wall—the nickname for the loyal fanbase—creates an electric atmosphere.
