Overview
Dr Ginu Rajan is Director of the Centre for Engineering Research in Intelligent Sensors and Systems and Reader in Sensor Technologies at Cardiff Metropolitan University, UK. He has an established international research profile spanning photonic and intelligent sensing systems, smart and advanced composite materials, biomedical sensing, and structural health monitoring.
Dr Rajan has led and co-led major research projects in the UK and Australia, working closely with industry and interdisciplinary partners. He has secured over £2.8 million in competitive research funding as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator from agencies including UK Research and Innovation, Ser Cymru, the Wales Innovation Network, the Australian Research Council, and the Australian Department of Industry, Innovation and Science.
His research has delivered demonstrable real-world impact, including the commercialisation of the patented STELA biomaterial composite system (SDI Ltd, Australia) and an AI-assisted brain concussion monitoring system developed with Brain Health Now Ltd (UK).
Dr Rajan serves as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Sensors Journal and Measurement and Control, and has acted as Lead Guest Editor for the IEEE Journal of Selected Areas in Sensors. He regularly reviews for over 30 international journals and is an expert assessor for major funding bodies, including UKRI, the Australian Research Council, and national science foundations in Belgium, Portugal, Poland, and the Czech Republic.
He has authored over 180 peer-reviewed publications, including two edited books and holds two patents, and has successfully supervised six PhD candidates and one MPhil to completion.
