Biography

Laura graduated in 2011 with a BA in Surface Pattern Design from Swansea College of Art. Shortly after, she was the recipient of the Jane Phillips Award from Mission Gallery, Swansea. Laura then moved to Western Australia to complete her Masters degree exploring materiality, memory and loss in drawing and textiles whilst working at Perth Institute of Contemporary Art.

Upon returning to the UK, Laura completed a PGCE teaching qualification and established her studio practice where she has exhibited nationally and internationally, receiving selected funding and awards from Arts Council of Wales, Arts Council England and the Gane Trust whilst completing large-scale commissions for clients such as Persimmon Homes and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. Laura previously taught at Plymouth College of Art and Bristol School of Art and has been teaching since 2016.

Laura is a multi-disciplinary designer based in Cardiff. Working with textiles and drawing, Laura explores fragments, traces and the circularity of nature. Finding beauty in what is overlooked, she is fascinated by things that disappear. She prioritises hand-drawing and digital manipulation to create her designs for fashion textiles.

Referencing the circularity of natural life, Shōkō is the studio label that Laura Edmunds works from, meaning lull, quiet, rest. The stories embedded within cloth and clothing is a key focus of her studio practice - believing it is a privilege to share your life with fabric as it absorbs personal moments and histories.

Current research

Laura’s current studio practice is an amalgamation of research into the semiotics of cloth, death and memory, with hand-drawn design for fashion textile print under the label Shōkō.
