This degree can be studied as a three-year full-time degree or a four-year degree that includes a year of foundational study. Our foundation year is intended to prepare you for your subsequent years of studying, offering you the chance to strengthen your skills, knowledge and confidence.

The foundation year will be relevant to:

  1. Students who have not achieved the required A-level points (or equivalent) score to enter the first year of the degree programme.
  2. Mature students who have been out of the formal education system for some time.

Our LLB Law degree offers all the foundational modules needed to satisfy the academic requirements for progressing onto Bar training to become a barrister as well as key legal knowledge and practical skills designed to prepare you for your Solicitors Qualification Examinations (SQE) to become a solicitor and for the professional training to become a CILEX lawyer. You will also study the following core innovative skills-based modules:

Year 1 (Level 4)

Study six compulsory modules (120 credits).

Compulsory modules (20 credits each):

  • Introduction to Legal System, Method and Ethics
  • Constitutional Law
  • Contract Law
  • Criminal Law
  • Administrative Law, Human Rights and Equality
  • Legal and Professional Skills

Year 2 (Level 5)

Study four compulsory modules (80 credits) and select two optional modules (40 credits).

Compulsory modules (20 credits each):

  • Law of Torts
  • Land Law
  • Legal Employability, Clinical Practice for Enterprise and Start-Ups
  • The Law on Sustainability, Climate Action and the Environment

Select two optional modules (20 credits each):

  • Cyber Law
  • Commercial and Consumer Protection Law
  • Law of Evidence and Litigation

Year in Industry

You have the option to spend a year in industry on a work placement after successfully completing your second year of study. We have a dedicated work placement team to support you in securing a placement. This experience can boost your career prospects and give you an advantage when applying for jobs after graduation.

Year 3 (Level 6)

Study four compulsory modules (80 credits) and 40 credits of optional modules.

Compulsory modules (20 credits each):

  • Equity and Trusts
  • European Law
  • International and Comparative Law and Systems
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution

Optional modules:

  • Intellectual Property Law (20 credits)
  • Family Law (20 credits)
  • Dissertation and Legal Research (40 credits)
  • Year in Industry Experience (40 credits) (Select if completing a year in industry)

You’ll learn through a mix of traditional teaching methods, including lectures, tutorials and seminars, alongside experiential learning with practical workshops, hands-on clinical practice, advocacy and mock trials in our purpose-built moot courtroom at Cardiff School of Management. You will also benefit from guest speakers and workshops led by legal experts.

This blend of teaching methods ensures active engagement and the development of crucial skills for careers in the legal sector and beyond. Our course structure and teaching strategies are designed to support independent learning as you progress.

You’ll develop your skills and confidence in presenting, problem solving and public speaking by putting theory into practice throughout the degree.

Our LLB Law degree uses a range of different assessment methods such as, written coursework, presentations, reflective reports and exams. Plus, authentic assessments in placement learning, clinical practice, mooting and advocacy.

This blended approach allows you to demonstrate your competencies in a variety of formats, emphasising practical skills and strategic thinking.

You will be guided by our academic team throughout the learning process to help you improve your skills and understanding through feedback and encouraging you to reflect on your own learning to become an independent learner.

If you aspire to become a practicing solicitor or barrister, this degree is ideal for you. Our Law degree contains the foundations of legal knowledge needed to satisfy the academic component of Bar training with Bar Standards Board (BSB) to become a barrister.

You will also develop key legal knowledge and practical skills designed to prepare you for your Solicitors Qualification Examinations (SQE) to become a solicitor. This degree will also help you develop competencies and transferable skills to prepare you for a wide range of careers in policy areas, including international organisations, government departments, the charity sector, and the business world.

With employability integrated into every aspect of the course, you won’t just gain a deep understanding of the law, you’ll also learn how to apply it effectively in real-world and professional contexts. Plus, the option to work a year in industry before completing your studies.

Through mooting, work placements, advocacy, law clinic experience, and client interviewing, you’ll gain practical, transferable skills to prepare you for a successful legal career.

We maintain links with industry professionals from the legal sector and have featured practitioner talks to enhance your learning experience. Industry leaders including Blake Morgan and Nuffield’s Law deliver master class sessions.

You can also develop your work skills through our extra-curricular student Law Society, such as client interviewing, public speaking, assertiveness, networking and team working.

A dedicated careers and employability team further support you in finding work placements, internships or jobs. They offer information, advice and resources for job or study applications.

The following requirements are based on typical offers relevant to entering year 1 of the degree.

  • GCSE: Five GCSEs at Grade C / 4 or above to include English Language / Welsh First Language, Mathematics / Mathematics – Numeracy.
  • English Language Requirement: Academic IELTS 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in all elements, or equivalent.
  • A level subjects: Minimum three A levels to include Grades CCC. No specific subjects required. Welsh Advanced Skills Baccalaureate considered as a third subject.
  • BTEC National / Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma: DMM
  • T Level: Merit.
  • Access to Higher Education Diploma: No specific subjects required.
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma: 2 x H5. No specific subjects required.
  • Irish Leaving Certificate: 2 x H2 grades. No specific subjects required. Higher level subjects only considered with a minimum grade H4.
  • Scottish Advanced Highers: Grades DD. No specific subjects required. Scottish Highers are also considered, either on their own or in combination with Advanced Highers.
