Societies

We have a diverse range of societies at Cardiff Met, and here at the School of Technologies we are proud of the societies started by our students - that aren’t just solely tech related! From our Swifties to our Climbers and Gamers, we guarantee you’ll find something that interests you. And if you don’t see anything that takes your fancy, you can start up your very own society with full support from our Students Union team. Societies are a great way to connect with like-minded people, get more out of university, uncover a passion or a new skill, and just have a good time.

"During my first year of university, I soon realised that I, like many others on the Computer Security course, actually quite enjoy the practice of hacking computer systems and wanted to do it more often! Within the cyber industry many people practice Capture The Flag (CTF) competitions, where you legally compromise a target computer or software against other competitors. This led me, along with two others, to form the Cardiff Met CTF society. We teach each other various hacking concepts to not only enhance and hone offensive hacking skills, but to also enable us to compete at a high level at competitions. We have attended two CTF events so far, one of which was in person at USW. We took six of our members with us and came in first place!"

"I started the rock-climbing society to try and get more tech students physically engaged as we typically tend to spend a lot of time sitting in front of a computer! The society has grown from strength to strength, starting with just 4 members to now where we have 78 members. The society is not just about the free weekly climbs we do, it's about the social element too. We run a weekly social where we arrange activities like ice-skating or meals out. It’s all about building that sense of belonging within the community and rock climbing has made this so strong, not just for the society, but for the School of Technologies as well."

"As a dedicated Formula 1 fan, joining Formula Met has been an exhilarating journey. The design and construction of racing cars bridges the gap between engineering and teamwork and has allowed me to be part of a community of like-minded individuals. The society offers diverse opportunities where we work together to succeed in various Formula-style competitions, whether it's working on car construction, marketing, or team finances there are opportunities for everyone to contribute. Events like go-kart races and F1 watch along’s have helped build our community and has strengthened our bonds. Being a part of the Formula-Met society has not only deepened my passion for Formula 1 but has also proven to be a rewarding experience of skill development and collaborative success."
