Staff Overview

​Dr. Rehmat currently works as a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at Cardiff school of technologies, Cardiff Metropolitan University, UK. He earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in computer science from COMSATS university Islamabad, Pakistan, and his Ph.D. degree in electronics and computer engineering from Hongik University, South Korea. After obtaining a PhD degree he worked as an Assistant Professor at Gachon University, South Korea. Then he moved to UK, where he gained his post-doctoral experience at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, UK and Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK. During this time, he worked on various projects in the area of Edge Computing, Edge Intelligence/Edge AI, Internet of Things and 5G with various industries such as Ericsson Hungary and Rakuten Mobile Japan.

His work has appeared in more than 45 research papers in peer reviewed conferences and top journals such as IEEE Communications Magazine, IEEE Internet of Things journal, IEEE Transactions on Network Science and Engineering, IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine, Journal of Network and Computer Applications, and Future Generation Computer Systems. He currently holds four patents, and his two US patents are under review.

In terms of professional service, Dr Rehmat has served as a member of the technical program committee, as a keynote speaker and as a session chair for several flagship conferences such as ACM ICN, ACM IMC, and as an invited reviewer for numerous high-impact journals. In 2022, Dr. Rehmat was recognized as Global Talent by the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK. More information is available from his personal website at www.rehmatkhan.com

Teaching

​His research and teaching activities have primarily focused on network and distributed systems, particularly edge/fog computing, information centric networking and 5G evolution and beyond with a recent focus on distributed machine learning such as federated learning for edge computing systems.

At the University of St Andrews, UK and Queen’s University Belfast, he actively contributed to the supervision of several PhD and MEng students. At Cardiff School of Technologies, he is currently supervising six undergraduate students.

He is available for PhD/MPhil/MSc/BSc supervision in the following areas:

Research

​Dr Rehmat’s research focuses on the broader areas of network and distributed systems particularly the development of architectures, algorithms, and protocols for emerging paradigms, such as edge computing, edge Intelligence/edge AI, information centric networking, and 5G evolution and beyond with a recent focus on federated learning for edge computing systems. This includes the design, measurement studies, prototyping, testbed development, and performance evaluations.
