Student Voice

The Students' Union has a Welsh Language Officer who represents our Welsh-speaking students. The officer is a member of the University’s Welsh committees to make sure that the voice of our students is central to all our operations.

  1. The Use of Welsh Committee:
    • Oversees the implementation and monitoring of the Welsh Language Standards
    • Ensures that our Welsh language services are accessible and of high quality
    • Helps to normalise the use of Welsh across the University
  2. Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Branch

Meet our Welsh Language Officer

Find out more about Lia Huws, our Welsh Language Officer for 2025/26.

Where are you from?

I come from Anglesey.

What course are you studying?

I’ve just gained a degree in Sports Studies and Physical Education and am now going on to study a Masters course in Sports Nutrition and Exercise.

What kind of experience have you had as a Welsh Student at Cardiff Met?

As a Welsh student, the last three years have been really positive and lots of fun. It was great to continue my studies through the medium of Welsh, along with the opportunity to socialise and make new friends in Welsh.

What would you like to do to support Cardiff Met’s Welsh students?

I would like to be a strong voice to represent and unite more Cardiff Met Welsh students. One aspect which I’ve realised over the past three years is that so many Welsh students aren’t aware of the number of Welsh speakers within the University beyond their bilingualism courses, as well as the additional resources which are available. So I hope to bring us together to continue to strengthen the Welsh community within Cardiff Met.

How can students share their views and ideas with you?

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any question, point of view or idea you want to share. I can be contacted via e-mail at SUswyddogcymraeg@cardiffmet.ac.uk or if you happen to see me around campus, please come and have a chat!
