Cardiff Met student from Ukraine finds her voice through Politics degree – as Clearing opens for 2026
A Cardiff Metropolitan University student who relocated from Ukraine to the UK as a teenager is inspiring future applicants after sharing how her degree has helped her build confidence, resilience and a clear sense of purpose.
Oleksandra Shevchenko, a BA (Hons) Politics and International Relations student, first moved from Ukraine to Hereford, where she completed her A Levels before progressing to higher education at Cardiff Met, and has spoken about how her academic journey has shaped both her personal development and her future ambitions.
She already had a strong interest in global affairs, but now Oleksandra has used her degree to connect academic theory with real-world problems, gaining a deeper understanding of power, conflict and international decision-making.
“When people think about politics, they often think about elections, politicians, or debates on television, said Oleksandra. “For me, politics was never something distant. International decisions, diplomatic negotiations, and global responses to conflict influenced the lives of my family, my friends, and millions of other Ukrainians. That is why it feels strange to say that studying Politics and International Relations was never my original plan.
“When I applied to university, I was aiming to study an Accounting and Finance degree. It felt like the sensible choice and the path I had spent most of my time preparing for.
“Then Clearing changed everything. After receiving my results, I found myself looking at options I never expected. One of them was studying Politics and International Relations at Cardiff Met.
“At first, it felt like a change of direction. Now, after completing my first year on the degree, it feels more like I finally followed a path that had been there all along. Studying politics has given me something I did not realise I was looking for: a way to understand the forces that shape our world.”
