Psychological load, coping and wellbeing in Professional Rugby Union

Working with the Rugby Players’ Association (RPA), the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and Premiership Rugby this project looked at the psychological load faced by players in the English Rugby Premiership, the strategies they used to cope with the psychological load faced and the subsequent impact upon their wellbeing. The findings from this research have contributed to the Professional Rugby Mental Health provision review undertaken by Premiership Rugby, the Rugby Football Union and the Rugby Players’ Association. A number of subsequent player welfare initiatives have been adopted including the introduction of Mental Health Leads for each club, and Mental Wellbeing Monitoring and peer-to-peer support (such as Mental Health First Aid training) for players and staff.

Leadership and Wellbeing in High Performing Business

This ongoing project examines the role of leadership in developing thriving and resiliency within both high-performance business and sport contexts in the UK. Initial findings from longitudinal data collected with organisations from both the elite sport and public sector provide insight into what leaders actually do to impact upon their follower’s levels of work engagement, wellbeing and performance, with emphasis on the relational and empowering nature of these leader behaviours. The project is currently in the stages of developing bespoke leadership education and training programmes which will help to foster greater understanding of resilience and wellbeing promotion in the workplace for employers.
