We have a vibrant Welsh community at Cardiff Met, which includes both Welsh speakers and learners, and there’s plenty of opportunities and activities to get involved with.

Develop Welsh skills to boost your career

Welsh language skills are very valuable in Wales, both professionally and socially. The Welsh Government has a vision of a million Welsh speakers by 2050 so there’s an increasing demand for Welsh skills in the workforce across Wales.

Cardiff Met offers many opportunities to develop, improve and use these skills, if you would like to.

Welsh for all

For the first time, free Welsh lessons will be available to all Cardiff Met students in September 2025. Places are limited and will be available on a first come first served basis.

New to Welsh or studied Welsh in an English-medium school?

• For students on the below programmes, these lessons will be tailored to your areas of study and will form part of your course timetables:
  
  • Education (Year 1 of study)
  • Policing (Year 1 of study)
  • Speech and Language Therapy (Year 1 of study)
• All other students will be able to sign up for Welsh lessons at the start of term. Taster sessions will be available at Llandaff and Cyncoed campus during Welcome Week.

Do you already speak Welsh?

Cardiff Met wants to support you to use your Welsh as part of your studies and in everyday life.  If you are fluent, near-fluent or studying modules through the medium of Welsh, you can join one of our proficiency level classes. This will help boost your confidence in written Welsh, academic Welsh and using the language in public.
