“If it feels scary, it’s probably right”: Cardiff Met Illustration student shares Clearing success story

A Cardiff Metropolitan University graduate is encouraging students to embrace Clearing and follow their passions, after taking a leap of faith that led to award-winning success.

Rudaina Chowdhury, who studied BA (Hons) Illustration at Cardiff School of Art & Design, applied to Cardiff Met through Clearing and has since gone on to win a Dean’s Award and secure a prestigious creative fellowship.

Originally moving to Wales from Bangladesh during the Covid pandemic, Rudaina said how picking up her childhood hobby of drawing during lockdown helped her find a sense of control and direction in a time of uncertainty.

Despite initially being expected by her family to pursue a more traditional career, she chose to follow her creative ambitions and apply to art colleges.

Rudaina said: “I got into art school in London but sadly had to decline as there were complications around moving to London. I felt like my life was going to fall apart, but it didn’t. It never does. It always works out in some way or another. I applied to Cardiff Met through Clearing and got accepted to study BA Illustration.”

During her degree, Rudaina developed confidence in her creative voice, supported by tutors and access to a wide range of facilities and techniques.

She said: “Our lecturers would always remind us that we can do anything we want, without restriction. It was vital to be out of your comfort zone, and to take the leap of faith. When I graduated, I was awarded with the Dean’s award which was surreal, and I’m so grateful.”

Following graduation, Rudaina was selected for the competitive Artists Futures Fund Fellowship, which provides studio space, mentoring and professional development support for emerging artists.

Reflecting on her journey, she is encouraging prospective students considering Clearing to take a chance, even if it feels uncertain.

“If it feels scary, then it means you’re doing things right. Things will work out how they are meant to for you.”
