Cardiff School of Art & Design

Overview

Debbie is Associate Dean (Research) for the Senior Management and Planning Team, playing a central role in shaping Cardiff School of Art and Design's (CSAD) research strategy, excellence across the school’s art and design disciplines, and supporting research environments that foster innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration.

During her career, Debbie has contributed to significant research projects, supported substantial grant activity and co-led REF submissions. She also leads CSAD’s innovation activities, working closely with colleagues to support the work of FabLab Cardiff, the Perceptual Experience Laboratory (PEL) and Cardiff Open Arts School (COAS). She holds a PhD from Cardiff Metropolitan University, awarded for her research on demonstrating the impact of art and design research, a topic that reflects her longstanding interest in how art and design contribute to culture, society and the economy.

Before entering academia, Debbie built her experience in the arts sector through roles supporting exhibitions and cultural organisations. She has also written for arts publications and organised creative community events.

Debbie is a founding member of the Wales Arts and Humanities Alliance (WAHA), a pan-Wales initiative building deeper and stronger partnerships and knowledge exchange through the research and innovation excellence of higher education arts and humanities, and is a trustee for Artes Mundi, a major biennial international contemporary art exhibition and the UK’s largest contemporary arts prize.
