Matt Lloyd

Overview

Matt combines his work as a lecturer in media and journalism at Cardiff Metropolitan University with his role as a senior journalist at the BBC, based here in Cardiff.

After graduating from the University of Sussex in BA (Hons) Politics, he completed his post-graduate studies in journalism with NCTJ (National Council for the Training of Journalists) in Brighton.

Following early roles as a trainee news journalist in East Sussex, he progressed to head reporter with daily regional titles in south Wales, including the Western Mail and South Wales Echo, before joining Westgate Sports Agency as a sports journalist.

Matt spent 13 years at that agency – then regarded as one of the most influential sports news agencies in the UK – where he wrote for every major national newspaper (including the Sun, Daily Mirror, Daily Express, Guardian, Independent), major Sunday newspapers (inc Sunday Times, Mail on Sunday and Observer) as well as international news services such as Press Association and Reuters.

His work included reporting from global sporting events, including the Olympics, Rugby World Cup, Commonwealth Games, European Championships, Ryder Cup and Ashes while also becoming the lead Welsh rugby writer for News of the World.

Matt joined the BBC in 2016, working in both the sport and news departments and has covered several major news events, including general elections and crime, across various platforms, including online, radio and social media, as is now the news lead for BBC Sport Wales.

He joined Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2020 as an associate tutor before becoming a permanent member of staff two years later.
