Cardiff Met staff named as Fellows of the Learned Society of Wales

Four members of the Cardiff Metropolitan University community have been named among the latest Fellows of the Learned Society of Wales, recognising their outstanding contributions to research, scholarship, leadership and creativity in Wales and beyond.

Those elected as new Fellows from Cardiff Met are:

  • Dr Carmen Casaliggi, Reader in English Literature
  • Claire Curneen, Senior Lecturer at Cardiff School of Art and Design
  • Professor Yvonne Wren, Professor of Speech and Language Therapy
  • Dr Anne Freeman, Co-founder and Co-lead for Stroke Hub Wales and retired Consultant Physician

They are among 44 new Fellows elected this year, highlighting the excellence across Welsh research, innovation and cultural life. Over half (52%) of the new intake are women, marking the highest proportion of women Fellows elected in the Society’s history.

The four Cardiff Metropolitan University Fellows highlight the breadth of expertise and impact across the University, spanning the humanities, creative arts and health scientists.

Dr Carmen Casaliggi, based at Cardiff School of Education & Social Policy, is an internationally recognised scholar in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century literary and visual studies, with four monographs and extensive publications in leading journals.

Alongside her academic career at Cardiff School of Art & Design, Claire Curneen is an internationally renowned porcelain sculptor whose work is held in major collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum and Amgueddfa Cymru, and who advises the Arts Council of Wales.

Professor Yvonne Wren, of Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences, is an internationally respected leader in speech and language therapy research, specialising in child communication disorders and influencing clinical practice and national guidance.

Chair of Stroke Hub Wales at Cardiff Metropolitan University, Dr Anne Freeman OBE is a national leader in stroke care, advancing research and innovation to improve outcomes across Wales.

In addition to the University’s newly elected Fellows, the new cohort includes leading musicians, national heritage and cultural figures, internationally recognised artists, researchers addressing climate and environmental challenges, and innovators advancing the use of artificial intelligence in engineering and energy management.

Commenting on the achievement, Professor David Brooksbank, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Business, Global and Civic Engagement at Cardiff Metropolitan University and a 2018 elected Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales, said:
