We have a vibrant Welsh community at Cardiff Met, which includes both Welsh speakers and learners, and there’s plenty of opportunities and activities to get involved with.

Develop Welsh skills to boost your career

Welsh language skills are very valuable in Wales, both professionally and socially. The Welsh Government has a vision of a million Welsh speakers by 2050, so there’s an increasing demand for Welsh skills in the workforce across Wales.

Cardiff Met offers many opportunities to develop, improve, and use these skills.

Welsh for all

Free Welsh lessons will be available to all Cardiff Met students in September 2026. Places are very limited and will be available on a first come, first served basis.

New to Welsh or studied Welsh in an English-medium school?

For students on the below programmes, these lessons will be tailored to your areas of study and will form part of your course timetables:

• BA Primary Education with QTS - Year 1 students and year 2 and 3 students who joined Welsh lessons last year.
• BSc Speech and Language Therapy - Year 1 students and year 2 and 3 students who joined Welsh lessons last year.

All other students will be able to sign up for Welsh lessons at the start of term. To sign up, visit The Welsh Language Unit stand at the Info Hubs during Welcome Week, where you can register and find out more.

Do you already speak Welsh?

Cardiff Met wants to support you to use your Welsh as part of your studies and in everyday life. If you are fluent, near-fluent or studying modules through the medium of Welsh, you can join our Use your Welsh class. This will help boost your confidence in written Welsh, academic Welsh and using the language in public.

Did you know?

• As a Welsh student, you have the right to many Welsh language services from Cardiff Met.
• You can sit any exam or complete any assessment through the medium of Welsh for a module taught in English. If you’d like to do this, please make sure that you let your Programme Director know within the first month of the academic year.
• We offer all students Personal Academic Tutoring through the medium of Welsh.
