Cardiff Met is undertaking restoration works to the Cyncoed woodland area by reintroducing native tree species, improving biodiversity, enhancing soil health and creating a more resilient ecosystem for the future. The Estate will continue to manage the woodland to encourage natural regeneration and protect existing mature trees.

Our primary objectives are:

  • Restore the native habitat
  • Increase biodiversity of plants, birds, insects, and mammals through careful native planting and support for pollinators
  • Improve soil quality and drainage
  • Reduce the presence of invasive species
  • Manage woodland disease to prevent spread
  • Work with neighbouring property owners to Keep Wales Tidy and improve waste disposal practices

Supporting Oak Regeneration

This autumn, fallen acorns will be collected from existing mature oaks and planted to support oak regeneration. Using locally sourced acorns will help to maintain the woodland's genetic identity and support resilience to climate change.

Habitat Enhancement

  • Bird boxes are being built from repurposed wood
  • Deadwood habitats will be created to support insects, fungi, and birds
  • We are growing native wildflowers
  • We are support our local pollinators with bee boxes
