Mark Dacey awarded Honorary Doctorate for outstanding contribution to education
Mark Dacey, Principal and Chief Executive Officer of NPTC Group of Colleges, has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Cardiff Metropolitan University in recognition of his exceptional contribution to further education, skills development and public life in Wales.
With a career spanning nearly three decades in senior leadership, Mark has played a transformative role in shaping further education across Neath Port Talbot and south west Wales. Since becoming Principal of Neath Port Talbot College in 2004, and later Group Chief Executive in 2013, he has led the organisation through significant growth and change, establishing it as a major provider of education and training that meets the needs of learners, employers and communities.
Mark’s journey into education is an inspiring example of lifelong learning and social mobility. After leaving school at 15 with no formal qualifications, he progressed through further education colleges before advancing to higher education at Cardiff University, the then Polytechnic of Wales and the University of Strathclyde. He has since built an extensive portfolio of academic and professional qualifications and is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (FRICS).
His career has encompassed roles across teaching, curriculum development and senior management in both Wales and England. In 1999, he was appointed by the Queen’s Privy Council as one of Her Majesty’s Inspectors for Education and Training (HMI), contributing to national oversight and improvement across all sectors. Alongside his executive responsibilities, Mark is Chair of the Children’s Rights Unit, a member of the Public Service Board, a member of the Children and Young Peoples Leadership Group, a member of the Building Safe and Resilient Communities Leadership Group, the Chair of the Wales Negotiating Committee for Further Education and the Chair of the 14-19 Network. He continues to influence education and public policy through a wide range of leadership roles across Wales, supporting young people, communities and regional development; balancing these achievements with a strong commitment to family life.
Mark said: “I am deeply honoured to receive this Honorary Doctorate. Further education transformed my own life, and I have dedicated my career to ensuring others have the same opportunity to succeed. This recognition reflects not only my journey, but the work of colleagues across the sector who are committed to widening access, supporting learners and building stronger communities.”
Professor Julia Longville, Dean of Teaching and Learning at Cardiff Met, who nominated Mark for the award, praised both his professional achievements and his impact on others: “Mark Dacey is an exceptional leader whose career embodies the values of lifelong learning, resilience and public service. His influence on further education in Wales has been profound, and his commitment to creating opportunities for others makes him a truly deserving recipient of this honour.”
