News | 15 August 2024

Thirteen Cardiff Metropolitan University students, alumni, staff, and Cardiff and Met Hockey Club players are gearing up to represent the Hockey Wales Senior Men’s team for their upcoming EuroHockey Championship Qualifier tournament in Dublin from August 22 to 25.

As part of their preparations, they are playing a three-match test series at home against Austria. This series offers the squad a crucial opportunity to fine-tune their strategies and build momentum ahead of the highly anticipated tournament.

Several players with ties to Cardiff and Met Hockey are making notable contributions to the squad:

  • Nic Morgan, a current 1st team player for Cardiff and Met Hockey, earned his first senior international cap in the opening match of the series on Thursday. Nic is set to join BUCS this autumn to pursue an MSc.
  • John Bennett, a former Cardiff Met student and alumnus of Cardiff and Met Hockey Club received his first senior international cap during the series, marking a significant milestone in his hockey career.

The squad also includes:

  • Three current Cardiff and Met Hockey club players, including Cardiff Met staff member Alf Dinnie and player and Cardiff Met alumni Jack Pritchard, and Cardiff and Met player, Owain Dolan-Gray.
  • Five former Cardiff and Met Hockey players or Cardiff Met alumni.
  • Three new players who will be joining Cardiff and Met Hockey this season.
  • Debbie Masson, a Cardiff Met Sport physio, who is providing her expertise to the team.
  • Danny Newcombe, the Head Coach, who is an alumnus, former student player, coach, and director of hockey from the UWIC era.

Success in the women’s team

Adding to the celebration, Anja Atkin, a recent graduate from Cardiff Met, played a crucial role in the Wales Senior Women’s squad that secured a series win over Malaysia this week. The team is now preparing to travel to Scotland next week for their own EuroHockey Championship Qualifier tournament.
