Mitigating Circumstances and Special Cases

Volume 1: Regulations and Procedures

Section 5: Mitigating Circumstances

Mitigating Circumstances – March 2020

We have updated our Mitigating Circumstances policy to respond directly to the Covid-19 situation, providing clarity of what is required in illness, self-isolation or quarantine, in the event that students need to care for loved ones, or their ability to submit their work digitally becomes an issue in this circumstance.

If any student is concerned that they will not be able to submit online assessments, they may apply for Mitigating Circumstances for the following reasons:

1. Unable to access appropriate IT equipment at home
2. Inadequate or unsuitable space to study at home

3. Inadequate internet access

If students feel they fit into any of these categories, they must notify their Programme Team by 17.00 on Friday 27 March 2020. They will then be advised before the start of the assessment period whether they will:
a) Be able to take the assessment at a later date when a laptop can be made available OR
b) Be offered an alternative form of assessment.
All Mitigating Circumstances claims should be submitted online, via the link on the Student Portal. If you have issues accessing the Mitigating Circumstances claim system, or for more guidance on what evidence will be required to support a claim, please contact your school admin team.

Please be assured that Cardiff Metropolitan University is committed to supporting the learning, teaching and assessment of all students fairly and that no student will be disadvantaged as a result of the current situation.
